Sant Janabai
Sant Janabai (1258–1350) was a revered Marathi saint and poet of the Bhakti movement, born in Gangakhed, Maharashtra, to a Matang family. After her mother’s death, she moved to Pandharpur with her father and worked as a maid in the household of Damasheti, father of Sant Namdev. Deeply devoted to Lord Vitthal from an early age, Janabai became a spiritual icon despite having no formal education.
Known for her heartfelt abhangs (devotional poems), around 300 verses are traditionally attributed to her. Her poetry reflects devotion, humility, and spiritual wisdom. Sant Janabai is honored alongside saints like Dnyaneshwar, Namdev, Eknath, and Tukaram, especially within the Warkari tradition of Maharashtra.
