Swami Samarth
Shri Swami Samarth Maharaj of Akkalkot was a revered 19th-century Hindu spiritual master from the Dattatreya Tradition. Born in India, he traveled extensively across the subcontinent before settling in Akkalkot, Maharashtra, around 1856. Swami Samarth spent nearly 22 years there, guiding devotees with his divine teachings.
He attained samadhi in 1878, and his legacy continues to inspire millions, especially in Maharashtra and Karnataka. Today, the Swami Samarth Ashram in Akkalkot is a major pilgrimage site for followers seeking spiritual guidance and blessings.

Swami Samarth Maharaj’s origins and parentage remain mysterious. As per legend, when asked about his birth, Swami once said he emerged from a banyan tree (Vata Vriksha). He also mentioned his previous name was Nrusimha Bhan.
Swami Samarth is regarded as the fourth incarnation of Lord Dattatreya, and the third in physical form. He is also believed to be a reincarnation of Narasimha Saraswati, a revered saint of the Dattatreya tradition.
Swami Samarth Maharaj is believed to have first appeared in the Kardali forests near Srisailam in present-day Andhra Pradesh. During his spiritual journey, he traveled through Tibet, Nepal, and various Indian holy sites including Puri, Varanasi, Haridwar, Girnar, Kathiawar, Rameswaram, and briefly stayed in Mangalvedha near Pandharpur before settling in Akkalkot around 1856.
Swami also visited Maniknagar, Karnataka, where he spent six months with Manik Prabhu, another saint believed to be an incarnation of Lord Dattatreya. They shared deep spiritual dialogues under an Audumbar (cluster fig) tree. Swami Samarth later resided at his disciple Cholappa’s home in Akkalkot, now his main shrine.
His devotees chant the mantra:
“Aum Abhayadata Shree Swamisamarthaya Namaha”.
His life was documented in early biographies such as Shripadbhushan (1871) and Shree Guruleelamrut (1872).

Akkalkot – Akkalkot is a city in Solapur district, Maharashtra, located about 38 km southeast of Solapur, near the Karnataka border. It is best known as the spiritual home of Shri Swami Samarth Maharaj, a revered 19th-century saint and believed incarnation of Lord Dattatreya.
